Thoughtful, Slow & Mindful

We celebrate India’s rich heritage, inspired by our travels and childhood memories. Handcrafted in small batches on the finest natural fabrics, each piece honors age-old techniques, sustainability, and ethical craftsmanship.

The Journey Of a Banyan & Birch Piece

Inspiration & Design

Every collection begins with a story—drawn from our travels, childhood memories, and India’s artistic legacy. We translate these inspirations into detailed moodboards, setting the vision for prints, patterns, and color palettes.

Collaborative Production

Designing is a two-way street. We work closely with our production team and master artisans, valuing their expertise and insights. Their generations of craftsmanship guide refinements, ensuring each design is both beautiful and practical to create.

Fabric Selection

Quality begins with the right foundation. We carefully source natural fabrics like linen and cotton, chosen for their softness, durability, and sustainability—ensuring a luxurious feel that lasts.

Sampling & Testing

Before production begins, we test prints, colors, and techniques on fabric swatches. This step ensures every shade is just right and every detail is perfected before moving forward.

Fabric Pre-Wash

Before printing, our fabrics are pre-washed primarily for softness, while also ensuring a clean base and even dye absorption for rich, lasting prints.

Handcrafting Begins

Our artisans in Maharashtra and Gujarat bring each design to life using time-honored techniques like hand-block printing, hand screen printing, and weaving. Every piece is crafted by hand, making it truly one of a kind.

Stitching

Each piece is carefully stitched to perfection - our expert tailors ensure clean edges, enclosed zips, and flawless finishing.

Quality Check

Every product is meticulously inspected—edges are neatly finished, prints are set, and fabrics are pre-washed for extra softness. Only the best pieces make it through.

Thoughtful Packaging

We pack each order with care, using eco-friendly materials like recycled paper and biodegradable wrapping—staying true to our commitment to sustainability while delivering something special to your doorstep.

Design Philosophy

We are intentional in our design process, ensuring that each pattern, motif, and color palette reflects the richness of our heritage while remaining versatile for modern living.

Every piece is crafted with a bold yet minimal approach.

Our goal is to create pieces that are not just décor but heirlooms—woven with tradition, designed for today, and cherished for generations to come.

Our Craft

We work with India's age-old handcrafted techniques to create our pieces. Currently, we’ve started with hand-block printing, screen printing, embroidery, and weaving—each done by skilled artisans.

Here’s a closer look at these processes.

Hand-Block Printing

At Banyan & Birch, most of our products are crafted using the hand-block printing technique. An intricate process where master artisans carve designs onto wooden blocks, then stamp them onto fabric. Each piece is unique, with colors carefully mixed and patterns printed by hand, a process that can take days or even weeks to complete.

The time, patience, and skill behind every piece reflect the dedication and love poured into creating the products you bring into your home.

Hand-Screen printing

Another technique we use to bring our designs to life is hand-screen printing—a process that allows for intricate details and larger-scale patterns.

Our designs are first converted into stenciled screens by our artisans in Maharashtra. The screen acts as a negative, allowing the mixed dye to be pushed through with a rubber blade, imprinting the fabric with precision.

Weaving

Our placemats and throws are handwoven on traditional looms, where artisans carefully interlace threads to create rich textures and lasting quality. The slight variations in the weave make each piece unique, adding warmth and character to your home.
